ill ass movie poster.
We had high hopes for this little picture that could, and here it is delivering on its promise. According to Variety, Precious, which opened in limited release this past Friday, roped in $585,000 from 18 theaters on its opening day, making it the most successful film to ever bow on fewer than 100 theaters. Variety points out that, for comparative purposes, Milk grossed $268,487 from 34 theaters on its opening day, showing that Precious has double the draw power than most independent, limited-release films have in their first day. While Precious is slaying the competition at the domestic box office, Lionsgate has to play their cards carefully, as selling this story to overseas markets might not go as smoothly (the premise of the film might rub foreigners the wrong way). Nonetheless, Precious is on the road to success - see you at the Oscars.
